One of WA’s top food and wine festival’s Taste Great Southern starts today (18 March) and runs until 28 March, featuring more than 30 events across the 11 local government authorities in The Great Southern region.

The 11-day festival is a celebration of the Great Southern’s wine and food offering, held in stunning locations in region including Albany, Denmark, Porongurup, Mount Barker and Frankland River, the latter just 3.5 hours from Perth.

There are many events already sold out, but our top pick for wine lovers is the Great Southern Wine Journey on Wednesday 24 March.

The five sub regions that make up the Great Southern, namely, Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup, all boast award winning wines that are being recognised across the globe.

As you sip wines, learn more of what makes each sub region special in a Riesling and Shiraz tasting masterclass led by State Buildings Sommellier Emma Farrelly, who’ll guide you through to compare and contrast each subregion. While getting to know Great Southern wine, canapes by Derek Lau from MasterChef and cheese will round off a night of great wine, great food and great company. Ticket includes a glass of wine and canapes on arrival, five tastings of two varietals (Riesling and Shiraz) from the Great Southern wine subregions, presentations and substantial canapes, cheese and a glass of wine to finish.

If you can’t make to the Great Southern, there’s a Celebration of Great Southern Wine and Cheese at the Raffle Hotel in Applecross on Sunday, 21 March.

There will be 20 wines to taste from Riesling to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay to Shiraz, as well as a selection Great Southern cheeses. Meet and chat to winemakers and producers, and if you like, order wine for your cellar. Learn about cheesemaking from producers and discover more about the region and the remarkable food it produces. Ticket are just $45 on the door and includes Great Southern Wine and Cheese tastings.
