Renowned international wine website JamesSuckling.com has reviewed West Australian Rieslings finding ten of the best are from the Great Southern cementing the region’s reputation for producing outstanding Riesling.

Contributor to JamesSuckling.com and one of Australia’s leading wine commentators Nick Stock wrote that of the 37 wines tasted, a staggering 35 were rated at 90 points or above, four of which scored 95 points or higher.

“This consistently high base-line of quality coming from that state’s Great Southern region certainly ranks it on a par with the more well-travelled Australian Riesling regions like the Clare Valley and Eden Valley, albeit in smaller volumes,” Stock reported. “Explore these wines with confidence, they represent outstanding value in a global sense and you can (literally) taste the beauty of this remote Western Australian wine region in every single glass.”

Stock said he has been a fan of Great Southern Rieslings for over 20 years.

“They’ve developed in style to be such concentrated and complete wines, some with impressive textural depth – the evolution is impressive,” he said. “The intensity is always a feature in the best vintages, also traits like purity and tension – all the hallmarks of great dry Riesling – but winemakers are also exploring new stylistic ground with good success.”

Stock said that the Great Southern Wine Region is moving through what will be a very successful and memorable phase of its development.

“The region can deliver on a huge range of varietals and wine styles – instead of everyone making the same five or six wines there’s such an interesting offering with winemakers striving to be inventive and unique.

“It is impressive that the region can produce Riesling so well in an ever-growing range of styles and interpretations,” he said.

On JamesSuckling.com, Stock reported that “the Rieslings of Western Australia’s Great Southern region, Australia’s largest officially ratified Geographical Indication (G.I.), continues their trajectory upward to new levels of quality, interest and sheer deliciousness.
